Steps to Enable Chinese in Windows XP

  1. Open Control Panel Dialog box: Click on Start on the left hand bottom corner:

 

 

  1. Select Regional and Language options

 

  1. Click on the Languages Tab

 

  1. Check the box for Install Files for East Asian Languages

You may get this:

Click ok

 

Click on apply

 

This window will appear and install the language for you

 

If you did not have xp fully installed, you may be prompt for the CD. Locate the CD and put in the CDROM

 

When the install completes, you will be prompt:

 

 

To be safe, I would recommend click yes.

 

  1. Back to Control Panel, like in Step 1, Regional and Language Options, Click on Language Tab,

 

Click on Details, you will have the following:

 

  1. In the Default input Language Click the Add button

 

  1. Click on the Input Language list, Move the Cursor up/down to locate Chinese (PRC) from the dropdown list

 

  1. Click Ok, Back to Text Services and Input Languages

 

  1. Click on Apply

 

  1. Install Traditional Chinese; At the screen above, click on Add button

 

In the Input language drop down list, choose Chinese (Taiwan) this time, click OK

Click Apply

 


  1. To change the Input options, click on Properties while the selection pointing to Chinese(Taiwan)

 

 

Click on Keyboard mapping

Choose HanYu Pinyin, Click OK


  1. Back to

 

Click OK

Now, you have a EN appear on your bottom tool bar. : First icon on the right hand side

 

If you click on EN,

If you choose show the language bar, you will get this: usually on the right upper corner of your screen:

Choose Chinese (PRC) From the left Corner of the EN sign

In order to Translate between Simplified and Traditional Chinese, we need Microsoft® Office XP Proofing Tools Standard Edition needed for traditional simplified Chinese translation. However that requires different license.  At least it was true for Microsoft office Professional Edition. I am not sure about Personal office. Sorry. If the proofing tools is stalled, you will see the translate option from Tools Languge translate.

 

 

 


As an alternative, I would suggest to use open Office. www.openoffice.org and download the free office software Created by Sun MicroSystems, it looks and feels like Microsoft office.

 

In Open office, start OpenOffice.Org Writer: Click on Tools Options:

 


Check Enabled doe Asian Languages, then choose Chinese (Simplified or Traditional) Under Asian like below

Click Ok.

In the screen, type in 我是中国 人。

High light and select 

Click on

You will get

Since I typed in Simplified Chinese, I choose the second option and click OK.
